An interesting dilemma has arisen this year, surrounding which Capstone 1 case to write, if you are a repeat writer writing the CFE in May or September 2021.
Let's look at the options and discuss the pros and cons for each one. (Hopefully this will not happen, but the discussion below is assuming you are unsuccessful in Day 1).
May 2021 CFE
In the May 2021 CFE, there are 2 Capstone 1 cases being offered - either Distinct Hotels (version 2, as this was written in Sept. 2020) or Waste Disposal Incorporated (version 1).
If you are a repeat writer from Sept. 2020, it will make much more sense to write Distinct Hotels, as you already know the case from Sept. 2020. If you are a repeat writer from a previous year, it would make sense to classify yourself like a 1st time writer and write Waste Disposal. The reason for this is that if you are unsuccessful in May, you will not be able to write in Sept. 2021 (another issue to be discussed, not for now), and you will probably write in May 2022 and can write Waste Disposal again.
So, for repeat writers from Sept. 2020, write Distinct Hotels in May. Repeat writers from a previous year, write Waste Disposal in May.
Sept. 2021 CFE
Now, if you are writing the CFE in Sept. 2021, the choice is between Distinct Hotels (version 3) and Creative Toys (version 1).
Here is where it gets a bit complicated. Let's play this out.
If you are a repeat writer from Sept. 2020, it will make much more sense to write Distinct Hotels, as you already know the case from Sept. 2020.
If you are a repeat writer from a previous year, the choice depends on an assumption.
(a) Assumption - I'll write May 2022 if I fail Sept. 2021
In May 2022, you will have to write a new case. So write Distinct Hotels in Sept. 2021, as you have more Distinct Hotels cases to practice on (for sure the Sept. 2020 one in the CFE report and if you are lucky the May 2021 may be out by Sept. 2021).
(b) Assumption - I'll write Sept. 2022 if I fail Sept. 2021
In Sept. 2022, you can write Creative Toys. Thereofore, the choice is based on your risk tolerance. Here is what I mean.
(i) Play it 100% safe - If you think there is a possibility you will fail Day 1 in Sept. 2021, write Creative Toys, so you don't have to learn another case in Sept. 2022. (This will mean you will now have failed Day 1 twice and we should really talk!).
(ii) Take a calculated risk - If you think there is a good possibility of passing in Sept. 2021, write Distinct Hotels, as you have more to practice on. If you are unsuccessful, oh well, you took a shot and will have to learn a new case in Sept. 2022 (and again, we should talk!).
If you know you will write in May 2022, write Distinct Hotels.
If you think you would write in Sept. 2022, do some soul searching and either (a) play it 100% safe - write Creative Toys or (b) take a calcuated risk - write Distinct Hotels.
All that being said, the best thing you can do is make sure you pass this time round and make the above discussion irrelevant. We would be happy to speak with you so that we can help identify how you can do better this time round whether you were unsuccessful on Day 1 and/or Day2/3.
